Writer's Block: Long Nights, Short Poems

It's the winter solstice in the Northern hemisphere, summer solstice in the Southern hemisphere, and Haiku Day in the U.S. Does that inspire you to write a three-line poem with five syllables in the first and last lines and seven in the middle line?

I haven't written Haiku in years.
That was fun, but 1 is enough. lol

Writer's Block: What Kind of Wonderful?

A lot of people love the film It's a Wonderful Life. Some people find it to be not so wonderful. Do you have a favorite holiday-themed movie? And if so, what is it?

It's a Wonderful Life is a great film, and I watched it only last week with my mother and a friend. But, who can deny that Scrooge (1951) was also great movie, with Alastair Sim staring as Ebenezer Scrooge! I have always enjoyed black and white movies, perhaps because I grew up watching black and white tv, but this movie is better in b&w than it could ever be in color simply because of the miserly manner of Mr. Scrooge.

Another great old classic is Miracle on 34th Street (1947), where Kris Kringle, played by Edmund Gwenn, had his work cut out for him in proving that there really was a Santa Clause.

Writer's Block: Quarantine Etiquette

The holiday season happens to overlap with cold and flu season (and not just the bottle flu). When you get sick, do you go to work or school anyway, or do you stay home to avoid spreading your germs?

When I get sick, I stay home in bed with the heat on full blast, at least 4 quilts, and the humidifier going.

My brother, on the other hand, doesn't mind spreading the germs. He has two children in school, and whenever they want to visit, I always ask him if they're sick, or have been sick, and I ask the kids if any of their classmates are sick. Their father has a bad habit of dropping them off when they're running fevers, have bronchitis, or strep throat. Dolt!

I'm taking college classes at home so I avoid most of the nasty things out there, but I do have to venture out to buy groceries. (Hand sanitizer to the rescue!) lol I'll be upping the amount of Vitamin C I take, as well as adding a little more garlic to the vegetables.

What kind of dog (counting mixes and mutts) gets your vote as the champion of dogs?

Binky is my 4-yr-old pug. He is absolutely the best dog ever. I take him everywhere except to the grocery store. When I go on vacation, I call ahead to make sure my furbaby is welcome. He loves going for walks, taking baths, checking out what's on the computer, curling up for a little snooze on my lap, and peanut butter. Binky will not eat milk bones unless they have a layer of peanut butter on them, so he has his own jar. Yeah, I know - Even the vet says he is "spoiled rotten." :D

It's Tee Time!

Summer got here a week early with 100ยบ weather in GA, and I've been staying inside because it's just too wicked to go out. Writer's Block: Caring

Who do you care about most in your life?

I care most about my friends, and my pug, Binky. At the end of the day, my friends ask me how I'm doing - and they listen when I'm not feeling so hot. They can usually get me over my funk, and I always feel better when I talk to them. As for Binky, he's my best little buddy - always greets me at the door with his tail wagging and squeeling with delight that I've arrived home safe. Now who would do that for you? :D

I am boycotting Lowe's!

I am currently trying to collect my thoughts this morning as I've had a rather busy weekend that for some reason, has yet to settle down. Don't go shopping for major appliances unless you have the means to get rid of the old things, and don't shop at Lowe's - They are a rip off!

In my previous post, I explain what I purchased at Lowe's this past week. Upon inspection of my new goodies, I am not pleased, and I am wondering if they offer free pick up and return of my money?

Lowe's does not offer free delivery unless you purchase one major appliance over their listed $397 - or whatever it is. I spent $750 in the store and they still wanted to charge me $59 to deliver my new appliances? They are not losing money with all the new construction in this area, and this is something new but what ticked me off is that all of the appliances were dented and I did not pay scratch and dent prices! I am not a happy customer, and I will be sending a rather tense letter to the corporate office this morning.
I paid my BF $20 to haul the appliances to my house, but now, I have to get rid of the old appliances - a service that Lowe's provides - I did not ask if they charged for that, as they most likely do, but I won't be back, and am considering loading everything up and returning everything I purchased from them this evening - along with a new $285 lawnmower that worked for an hour and quit - and I haven't been able to get it to start back up. I can get the same appliances elsewhere, and I will not return to Lowe's.

New Appliances in My Tiny Kitchen

Thursday, I purchased a new range, small refrigerator/freezer, and 5 cu. ft. chest type freezer. I haven't had new major appliances in 15 years, so I am absolutely thrilled  - and amazed that what I had in my energy-hogging, full-size refrigerator is now fully encased in my  new, energy-efficient, counter-top refrigerator.

Being single, you wouldn't think I had much more than a few cups of yogurt, a bag of lettuce, and a 6-pack of beer in the 'fridge, but my old refrigerator was full, and I even went grocery shopping today.
  • 2 bags of lettuce
  • 1 box of dried pineapple
  • 2 boxes of ready-to-eat vegetable trays
  • 12 cups of yogurt
  • 1 quart of milk
  • All the condiments - relish, mustard, salad dressing, pickled peppers, soft-spread margarine, 2 jars of jelly, & a small jar of mayo
  • 1 box of cream cheese
  • 1 dozen eggs
Everything is neatly packed into a 2' x 3' space,  and nothing is crushed! The best part is that my food is now at eye-level where I can see everything without having to actually bend over and hunt behind the milk for the last slice of cheese.  The separate, small freezer in the top now holds all of my baking flour, mixes and cornmeal. (Living in the south has its drawbacks in the form of little bugs that like ground wheat & corn - yuck!)
My new chest freezer is 1/2 full and currently contains
  • 110 ears of fresh corn I put up this week
  • 5 lbs of mixed vegetables that needs to be divided
  • 8 bags of dried beans
  • 1 box of sausage biscuits
  • 2 boxes of sweet potato patties
  • 2 boxes of homemade soup
  • 1 box of chicken broth
  • 2 boxes of Kenyan coffee beans
  • 1 box of veggie burgers
  • 1box of soda pop push-ups
I planted swiss chard, beans (2 varieties), peppers, green onions, & gold zucchini this week - mmmm. August is going to be busy, and my new little freezer is going to be full. :)

The next step is moving things around in the kitchen, getting rid of kitchenware I don't use, and cleaning off my counter tops. I am really looking forward to it.  I cannot stand a cluttered kitchen, and when the stove quit working, I ended up getting a two-foot, 2-eye burner, and an 18" roasting oven for cooking, because I could not afford a new stove. I only had a 6' counter, and am really fanatic about having a minimalist look in my kitchen - the less to look at, the less to clean up - so I have been getting bummed out every time I walked into the kitchen. And then the refrigerator started acting up - I thought I would end up keeping my food in OPR (other people's refrigerators) just so it wouldn't spoil! Thank goodness for the check I got in the mail this week - There is a miracle I was not expecting!

If you have any ideas on how to decorate a small kitchen, your opinions and comments would be greatly appreciated - I have a 10' x 13' kitchen, with 3 doors and a window, all in the wrong places. Major remodeling is definitely on the list of "things to do"  - and - well, the remodel is for another blog. :)

Writer's Block: How I got on LJ

I found LJ through Twitter, who for some funny reason, doesn't allow Yahoo IM. Of course, being that Yahoo doesn't know who they want to be purchased by may be a good reason for that, and has anyone heard? I seem to have lost the tail end of that outcome - anyhow, here I am on yet another blog - which is cool because Google's Blogger does not have a live IM chat (yet).
